The origins of Kotdiji are recognized as belonging to the early Harappan period, which dates back to about 3500 BC. Although Kot Diji survived the Mature Harappan Period (c. 2600–1750 BCE), a layer of burnt debris separates the Early and Mature Period structures, suggesting that the settlement was heavily damaged by fire at some point.
Artifacts, including ceramics that display the distinctive Kot Dijian style, have been excavated from Kot Diji and other archaeological sites in the region.
Kot Diji is located near several other important historical sites. It lies east of Mohenjodaro, a group of hills that contain the remains of what was once the largest city of the Indus Civilization. Also nearby is a massive hill fort built in the early 19th century by the ruler of Tālpur, Sohrāb Khān.

Architecture of Kot Diji Fort, Sindh
At the time Kot Diji Fort was built, it was known as “Fort Ahmadabad”. It was named after Ahmad, a Persian architect who designed and designed the commendable architecture of this historic fort in Sindh.
The fort lies at a height of 110 feet from the ground and is situated at the southern end of the Rohri Hills. The royal gate, which is locally known as “Shahi Darwaza”, is the only entrance to KotDiji. Since the primary purpose of this fort was to fight enemies, the royal gate was built as a large wooden structure with iron spikes that made it elephant-proof.
As you pass through the entrance to the fort with its curved ceiling, you enter a small courtyard. The place is guarded by two heavy bastions, which is also one of the main dominant features of the fortifications of this building.
In addition, the fort has three strategically placed towers and many specially designed cannon placement zones. You will also see several roofless rooms in the palace. They were meant to store ammunition and are known as “Barood Khano” in the Sindhi language.
The art of simplicity has been uniquely used in the architecture of the Fort. The entire fort was built of burnt bricks as it was the only robust building material available locally at the time.
